Foundation, editorial e-commerce for an independent Portland bookstore. Six pages, custom PDP, headless Shopify.

Context

Most independent bookstore sites look like a stock Shopify with a different logo. The brief: design one that reads like a thoughtful neighborhood shop instead. Staff picks, handwritten cards, editorial point of view. The voice on the shelves, translated for screen.

Approach

Foundation tier: deeper research on the buying journey, custom product-detail components for book metadata (binding, page count, ISBN, staff notes), SEO foundations, and a journal section for staff picks and author features. Headless Shopify under the hood.

Designed to test

Editorial-first e-commerce IA, an inventory-aware reading-room layout, and a custom PDP that handles staff-pick storytelling without breaking catalog scale.

What good looks like

Good looks like: a staff-pick card with a handwritten note feels native, not bolted on. The PDP renders 500 titles without breaking the editorial frame. Inventory state changes do not require a designer's re-touch. Journal posts and product pages share one content model. Checkout LCP holds under 1.5 seconds on simulated 4G.
